I pointed at the lid, where a . . . um, let’s say maquette-sized square of wood was carved into the top.

He smiled. “Let’s go!”

We carefully put all the loose pieces back in place, then rested the model on the lid. It fit perfectly.

There was a click and a whir from somewhere under the floor.

“YES!” We jumped and gave each other a high five.

When we landed back on our feet, we must have jiggled something in the old record player because it sprung to life. The strains of a song came out through the giant horn.

“Hey, I recognize this! It’s the Charleston!” I said, starting to swing my arms and legs in time with the music.

“Let me guess,” said Gabe, sighing. “You know all the moves.”

“Heck yeah! My mom always plays old dance music like this. You know that!”

I kept moving, holding my arms out and kicking my legs side to side, then crossing them in front. Gabe laughed and tried to join, watching me and following the steps.

“This is so great! I knew Charlotte knew how to party!”

Suddenly, the music stopped. We could still hear the needle on the record—a scratchy, repetitive tone. Then we could hear a tinny voice. It sounded far away and was partly obscured by an ocean of static.

“Please tell me that’s not a ghost!” Gabe said, at the exact same time as I said, “MORE GHOSTS PLEASE!”

“Zed . . . and Gabe . . .” said the record player.

Gabe screamed, looking around in panic. “It knows our names?!”

The temperature dropped again. “. . . you look but do not see . . .”

The chest beside us began to shake. The lid opened like a shot, jettisoning our model like a catapult. The model hit the door and smashed into a gazillion pieces.

Gabe groaned and fell to his knees. “I was sure that was the right one.”

The ghostly voice continued, “If you do not leave now . . . you will never . . . leave . . . this house . . .”
